Photo: by Mike Hiltunen We are offering an opportunity for you to improve your skills in using social media and other formats to put your message across to the press, radio and TV Our next Media lab session in Birmingham will be on Wednesday October 15th from 3.00 – 8.00pm. The sessions are free, however you will need to say what you would like to do and book a time to drop in at the Piers Road Resource Centre, 1 Piers Rd, Birmingham, B21 0UY Are you working on a new article? Writing a blog? Don’t know how to Tweet? Not on Facebook? This Media Lab session enables you to get free professional practical support from people with expertise. For those who are more Social Media savvy (i.e. you’re on Facebook, Twitter etc.) we will be writing press releases, setting up hashtags to send to the media before Migrant Voices “meet the migrants” public event to be held on 29th October. There is also an opportunity to speak to a media professional employed by the BBC in Birmingham. Our mentors for 15th October: Jenny Smith is an Arts professional and freelance producer working with the Birmingham Rep. Theatre. She will be helping those with little or no experience of Twitter and Facebook, helping you to set up your own Twitter or Facebook page and answer your beginners’ level questions. Tom French is from a project called “Community on Board.” This project assists community groups and voluntary organisations with using social media and blogging. Tom will assist with writing press releases and messaging on social media (Twitter etc.) for your organisation and for the Migrant Voice public event on 29th October. Parminder Dosanjhol is a Producer for BBC Radio WM based at The Mail Box in Birmingham. She will be around to advise those sending press releases or who want to be featured on the radio shows on how best to approach the producers and journalists based at the Radio station. She will pass on her knowledge on what kind of stories the media prioritise and how to go about approaching those who control media output. The additional theme for this lab will be preparing press releases and publicity for “meet the migrant event” to be held in central Birmingham on October 29th 2014.
