West Indies to West Midlands' exhibition Free Launch Event 11th Nov 2014

Photographic exhibition‘West Indies to West Midlands’ is the most recent work of documentary photographer Inès Elsa Dalal, who specialises in conducting social commentary projects involving heritage, community, sanctuary and social rituals. 

Previous ethnographic studies range from locations as hyperlocal as Harborne and Balsall Heath, Birmingham, to as far-reaching as Jerusalem, Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

‘West Indies to West Midlands’ is comprised of contemporary portraits of West Indian war veterans and their archival photographic collections. Inès has been working to document WAWI Project for the past 12 months and will continue to work with under represented communities for the entire 4-year commemoration of WW1 (1914-1918)

WAWI Project seeks to highlight the link between over 400 years of mass migration to under publicised military history; West Indian contribution to the British military has so far not been publicly acknowledged let alone commemorated.

WAWI Project’s principal aim is to promote greater awareness and understanding of Britain’s diverse population. ‘It is our mission to connect cultures and restore civic and national pride by actively engaging with individuals and groups.’

‘We strive to promote equality and diversity within local areas and the wider community and seek to promote an environment free of discrimination and ignorance through improved channels of communication and education.’
